This is why you disconnect from yourself

All forms of disconnection comes from fear. Fear that you will be hurt if you remain connected to your emotions, your body or your higher self.
When we experience trauma in its various degrees, to protect ourselves from pain we separate a part of ourselves from that hurt place.
Over time this becomes the norm and without diving deep into the pain to express, purge and heal it we become reliant on a constant state of disconnection.
From my own childhood I can see that it began with my withdrawal into TV and movies, then food became a huge crutch and later in my life I used to numb out with weed. This was before I really knew what I was doing or why. So it's easy to see how a person can spend their entire lives in this cycle.
Disconnection creates a state of de-centredness. This misalignment is the state of most people's lives where very little joy is found beyond the temporary "highs" of living for the weekend, alcohol/smoking/drugs, distracting ourselves with meaningless sex, social media or any other form of anaesthetising activities that are available to us. In fact ANY ACTIVITY can be numbing out of we are using it to unplug from ourselves.
The first steps to moving back to ourselves is examining our habits. It can be hard to wade through the swamp of the shame and guilt that these disconnecting activities create. It is often painful to see the damage we have done to ourselves.
However one marker of whether you are using something to disconnect is by taking it away.
Do you feel agitated?
Do you need to do that thing to feel normal?
Do you feel like there is nothing left to do without it?
If so then you've discovered one of your disconnection activities.
There will always be a risk of replacing one form of numbing out with another until we heal our emotional, physical and spiritual wounds.
